What is the difference between Professional
and Retail products?
Retail products are members of the Smog
AvengerTM line of products that replace
mufflers on home small-engine implements (such as
lawnmowers). The existing mufflers tend to be
simple in construction and smaller. Because of
the larger quantities inherent in retail sales,
we are offering a standardized low fixed price
for all retail lawnmower mufflers.
On the other
hand, most mufflers from professional equipment
such as golf course greens mowers and other
implements tend to be larger and more complicated,
with extended tail pipes and mounting brackets.
Because the professional implements come in much
smaller numbers, the amount of engineering
required to match a catalytic converter footprint
to an existing muffler footprint is relatively
higher and requires custom quotations for each job.
Why is the ordering process for cylindrical
mufflers with a threaded engine connection
treated differently?
As far as we can tell, at least for American
engines, there are only 1/2" pipe thread and 3/4"
pipe thread connections. Because cylindrical
mufflers tend to come from older small-engines,
they do not tend to have muffler shields or other
nearby obstructions. So once a thread size is
determined, no other information is needed to
select the correct catalytic converter.
How can I tell what thread size is required
for my cylindrical lawnmower muffler?
The simplest method is to take your muffler
off with a pipe wrench, take the muffler to your
local hardware store, go to the pipe aisle, and
screw your muffler into female pipe fittings
until the correct thread size is found.
Can the Smog AvengerTM catalytic
converter damag my engine?
We have tested engines for days with the
Smog Avenger catalytic converters on my brands
and size lawnmower engines. We see no sign of
damage, no change in fuel usage, and no change
in engine power. Calculations confirm that
our catalytic converters should have no ill
effects on an engine.
